Understanding scoliosis
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine, usually with an element of rotation. It ranges from mild curves that never cause difficulty to significant ones requiring specialist care.
Because curves can change over time, particularly during growth, the ability to measure repeatedly without radiation exposure is genuinely valuable.
Signs you might notice
- One shoulder or shoulder blade more prominent
- Uneven waist or hip height
- A visible curve when bending forwards
- Clothing that never seems to hang straight
- Back ache after prolonged standing or sitting
Common contributing factors
- Idiopathic scoliosis, where no single cause is identified
- Curves developing during growth spurts
- Differences in leg length or pelvic position

How we assess and treat it
The DIERS formetric scan captures your spine in three dimensions, including the rotational component that a flat image cannot show. Because there is no radiation, it can be repeated as often as clinically useful.
We are not a substitute for specialist spinal or surgical care, and we work alongside it. Where a curve needs specialist review, we will say so and support the referral.

Common questions
Can treatment straighten a scoliosis?
Exercise based approaches do not straighten established curves. What they can do is improve strength, comfort and function, and monitoring tells us whether a curve is stable.
Is this suitable for children and teenagers?
The absence of radiation makes repeat monitoring far more appropriate during growth. We work alongside specialist services rather than replacing them.
Can I share the results with my consultant?
Yes, and people often do. The report is objective and readable, which makes it useful to other clinicians.
