Orthotic Therapy in Cheltenham

Orthotics are a tool, not a destination. Our aim is usually to get you needing them less, and often not at all.

Understanding orthotic therapy

An orthotic changes how load is distributed through the foot. Used well, it can settle painful tissue quickly and give you the window needed to build strength and change movement patterns.

Used poorly, it becomes a permanent crutch that masks a problem without ever addressing it. That distinction shapes how we prescribe them.

Signs you might notice

  • Currently wearing orthotics but unsure whether you still need them
  • Pain that only stays away while insoles are in
  • Being told you will need them permanently
  • Orthotics that never felt quite right
  • Recurring foot, knee or back symptoms

Common contributing factors

  • Loading patterns that overload one structure
  • Weakness through the foot and lower limb
  • Foot posture that needs temporary support
  • Recovery phases after injury or surgery
  • Specific conditions where permanent support is genuinely appropriate

How we assess and treat it

We map your pressure distribution before prescribing anything, so any device is based on measurement rather than impression. We then reassess with the orthotic in place to confirm it is doing what we intended.

Alongside that, we build the strength and movement changes that mean the support can gradually be reduced. For some people, particularly with certain structural or medical conditions, ongoing support is the right answer, and we will say so plainly.

  • Pressure mapping before and after prescribing
  • Prefabricated or bespoke devices as appropriate
  • A plan for reducing dependence over time
  • Foot and lower limb strengthening programme
  • Footwear advice so the device actually works

Common questions

Will I need orthotics for life?

Often not. Many people can be weaned off them once strength and movement improve. Some conditions do warrant long term support, and we will tell you honestly which camp you are in.

Are custom orthotics better than off the shelf?

Not automatically. For many problems a well chosen prefabricated device performs just as well. We prescribe based on what your measurements show, not on what costs more.

Can you review orthotics made elsewhere?

Yes, and we often do. We can measure whether they are achieving what was intended.
